In 2021, Frieda helped for the first time in the Ahr valley after the devastating flood and the valley has not let her go since. As a result, Frieda developed the desire to study geography. In her internship, the high school student wanted to get her first insights into studying and researching geography.
During her internship, Frieda was able to get a taste of many different areas. For example, she got to know geoinformation systems and their software and created her first maps. Dr Rainer Bell took her to the Ahr valley twice for field work. Among other things, she learned about the significance of landslides during flood events. In addition, the student intern tested differential GPS devices with Gabriele Kraus, and with Dr Anna Schoch-Baumann, Katja Höreth and Marc Tuschen she was in the Katzbachtal, where the discharge of a stream was measured using the salt tracer method and two mobile climate stations were installed in preparation for field work. Frieda Kühn took part in a KaVoMa lecture weekend, a Master's colloqium on the "HyPerm" research project and several seminars.
Through these activities, Frieda Kühn gained extensive insight into teaching and various research projects as well as geographical methods. She was able to learn many herself and subsequently apply them herself. It was precisely the mixture of teaching and research, theory and practice that strengthened her desire to study.
