Regenerating Rangelands

This film follows two young pastoralists from Kenya and Tanzania. Through their eyes and their daily struggles, the viewer witnesses the changes taking place through a newly introduced method of participatory rangeland management. Starting from semi-arid landscapes that could not be more hostile to life, the film documents how these difficult starting conditions are shaping the livelihoods of the people in the region. It is the people themselves who know the causes of the degradation and therefore intuitively understand what needs to be done once they are empowered to do so. The film highlights a possible solution anchored in Participatory Rangeland Management (PRM) and answers the question of how to mobilize rural communities, how best to manage shared rangelands and how to introduce sustainable management of these valuable resources. It is embedded in a global debate about the importance of the Earth's ecosystems, which also features experts from different schools of thought who argue for the restoration of landscapes and the urgency to restore the full ecological function of our rangelands. Overcoming rural poverty is essential to protecting biodiversity and successfully mitigating climate change on a global scale.
