Bonn is not alone–Consequences of losing administrative functions

Bonn is a unique case in Europe of a city that lost its capital functions. Such a change significantly impacts the city’s development trajectory. In Bonn’s case, it appears that despite the changes, the city continues to thrive. However, situations are often more complex. A similar phenomenon occurred in Poland at the regional level. As a result of the territorial division reform, 33 regional capitals lost their administrative functions. Many of them plunged into crisis, and their development slowed significantly. What are the commonalities and differences between the cases of Bonn and the Polish cities? What actions were taken by the authorities in both instances? What lessons can Bonn draw from the experiences of Polish cities, and vice versa? This presentation will attempt to address these questions.

There will be a lunch snack (Brezeln) for the participants.
