Controls on soil moisture & hydro. response a Mediterr. catchment
Controls on soil moisture variability and hydrological response to extreme events in a small Mediterranean catchment
Understanding how catchments react to extreme hydrometeorological events, such as droughts and floods, is a fundamental step towards a more detailed analysis of water mixing, storage, and release processes. In this presentation, Prof. Daniele Penna will show hydrometeorological data collected in the 2 km² Re della Pietra experimental catchment, Apennine mountain range, Tuscany, Central Italy. The results focus on the identification of the hydrometeorological controls on the occurrence of dry periods and major floods occurred during the monitoring period, aiming to highlight the catchment recovery time from dry to wet conditions, and viceversa.
The outcomes of this study shed new light on the interrelations of different factors to drive the ecohydrological response of Mediterranean catchment under extremely different meteorological conditions.
