Cultural Geography: Gender and the populist radical right
International Lecture in Cultural Geography: Gender and the populist radical right
The surge of the populist radical right is a defining aspect of the contemporary political landscape. Although populism has a chameleon-like quality and taps into different discursive resources across various political, social, and cultural contexts, gender plays a central role in the construction of populist radical right discourses. Therefore, analyzing the populist radical right through a gendered lens is essential. This lecture will delineate the gendered discursive tropes of the populist radical right across different contexts such as Turkey, Hungary, the Netherlands, Germany, and France. The lecture also aims to foster discussion on the trajectories of research on the radical right populism-gender nexus and how perspectives from feminist research and critical studies of masculinity can be utilized to understand the uses and abuses of gender as a “meta-language” by the populist radical right.
