Department of Geography at the University of Bonn

The Department of Geography is a member of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at the University of Bonn and part of the Department of Earth Sciences.

Research and teaching at the Department of Geography encompasses almost the entire spectrum of Geography, which guarantees the necessary breadth in an interdisciplinary degree course. The following scientific areas are established at the department:

The departments nearly 200-year history stretches back to 1828, when the first geographer (G. B. Mendelssohn) gained a post-doctoral Habilitation at the University of Bonn. The first professorship in geography was established in 1875 along with the associated “apparatus.”

Organizational Structure

The basic structure of the Department of Geography is formed by its general management and nine scientific areas with a total of 13 research groups.

The Geographical Society of Bonn

The Bonn Geographical Society is a non-profit association. Its main goal is to present geographical research results to a broad public.
