Prof. Dr. M.C. Fragkou is associate professor in the Department of Geography at the Universidad de Chile in Santiago. In 2023, she took over the academic leadership of the transdisciplinary environmental programme (PROMA) at the Universidad de Chile.
Her research focuses on water scarcity and water governance, environmental justice and adaptation to climate change from a political ecology perspective. She is currently involved in two interdisciplinary research programmes. The first centres on issues of water (in)security in Chile in the context of climate change, while the second looks the question of how scientific findings on climate scenarios are incorporated into political decision-making processes from an interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary perspective.
During her visit to the Department of Geography, Prof. Fragkou gave a lecture on the ongoing water crisis in Chile, entitled "Do technical transitions guarantee water security for all?", as part of the departmental Wednesday seminar series. She also participated in the Cultural Geography research group’s Master's colloquium, the PhD colloquium, and she also took part in various networking activities. In addition, the three colleagues organised a small writing workshop on "Discussing water governance in relation to SDG 6" during her stay, in which selected members of the department took part alongside researchers from the Bonn Water Network (the University of Bonn and IDOS), as well as the Universities of Cologne and Heidelberg.
