Our colleagues Prof. Dr. Kathrin Hörschelmann and Mauricio Estrada, together with colleagues from the World Resources Institute, have recently published a paper analysing the importance and necessity of women's empowerment for urban transformation, using the example of the SWaCH initiative in Pune, India. The publication discusses the intersections of gender, class and caste, their role in informal labour and urbanisation, and the ways in which global sustainability-focused agendas tend to overlook local struggles, processes and imperatives. SWaCH is an example of a bottom-up cooperative that seeks to address these issues, and shows that when non-formal initiatives work fairly and together with formal city managers, they can improve living conditions for both parties. Her paper was awarded the WRI Ross Center Prize for Cities. The paper can be viewed here.
