Biography
After studying geography and political science in Heidelberg and New Delhi, Julia Poerting investigated the role of scientific discourses, sustainability and regionalization for organic farming practices in Pakistan in her PhD thesis.
Her current research project focuses on the return of wolves to rural regions in northern Germany. Here, she investigates how certain technologies (fences, transmitting collars, genetic analyses) should enable the coexistence of humans, wolves and grazing animals and generate knowledge about wolves. In this context, knowledge is not neutral and is involved in conflicts of authority. Furthermore, it is a question of how far societal ideas of nature and wilderness as external to culture and city harden the fronts between wolf supporters and critics. The public debates about the return of the wolf reveal different, competing landscape concepts.
